Visiting Annecy in 1 day

4 min readPublished on 9 October 2026

In short

For a day in Annecy, focus on the must-sees that are closest to each other: the lake and its shores, the old town and its canals, the Palais de l’Isle, the medieval castle and the Pont des Amours. Enough to combine nature, heritage and Savoie treats without rushing.

Key takeaways

  • Lake Annecy: bike, pedalo or paragliding rather than walking around it (3 to 6 h).
  • The old town: pedestrian lanes, canals, craft shops.
  • The Palais de l’Isle: local history museum, a medieval building on an island in the Thiou.
  • Annecy castle: panoramic view over the lake and the old town.
  • The old town market, rue Sainte-Claire: Tuesday, Friday, Sunday.

Nicknamed the “Venice of the Alps”, Annecy is an Alpine town well worth a visit during your stay at our campsite in Savoie: allow about 1 h 40 by road (around a hundred kilometres) from our campsite in the Tarentaise, a lovely day trip. Its exceptional location, on the shores of the lake and surrounded by mountains, gives it undeniable charm. Annecy is divided into two distinct parts: the old town, rich in history and architecture, and the modern area, with shops and a shopping centre.

Planning to visit Annecy in 1 day? Here is what not to miss!

Discover Annecy in 1 day

Enjoy the splendours of Lake Annecy

Of course, you cannot visit Annecy in one day without taking time to admire its magnificent lake. There are two options: a walk around the lake or water and outdoor activities.

Several walking paths surround the lake. If you only have one day, forget walking all the way around, which takes too long (between 3 and 6 hours depending on pace and breaks).
Instead, you can hop on a bike or even rent a pedalo or a boat. And why not try paragliding over breathtaking landscapes?

Wander the lanes of the old town

In the heart of Annecy's old town, the narrow pedestrian streets, lined with buildings of authentic charm, are perfect for a delightful stroll. The little bridges spanning the canals and the charming passages between colourful façades are reminiscent of a miniature Venice.

As you wander through Annecy's old town, take time to browse the craft shops before settling into one of the cafés or restaurants by the water for a tasty break. Ice cream lovers will not want to miss Le Glacier des Alpes, a local institution open since the 1960s.

Admire the beauty of the Palais de l’Isle

The Palais de l’Isle is one of the most photographed sites in Annecy. A true emblem of the town, this magnificent building in the heart of the old town charms visitors with its unique architecture and rich history.

Built in the Middle Ages, it has served as a prison, a courthouse and a care home. Today, the Palais de l’Isle houses a museum dedicated to the history of Annecy and its region, offering a fascinating immersion in the town's past.

Perched on a small island in the middle of the Thiou, its unique setting adds to its charm, making it a must-see for anyone visiting Annecy for a day or longer.

Climb up to Annecy Castle

Visiting Annecy for a day also means going to Annecy Castle, a building dating from the 12th century. Overlooking the old town and reached by a steep path, this medieval castle, once the residence of the Counts of Geneva, now houses a museum that invites you to dive into the history of Annecy and the Savoy region.

From the top of the castle, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view over Lake Annecy and the colourful rooftops of the old town.

Plan your one-day visit to Annecy

Cross the Pont des Amours and stroll in the Pâquier

Facing the town, on the shores of Lake Annecy, lies a vast park called Le Pâquier. This green space is home to the Jardins de l’Europe, perfect for a picnic by the water.

Nearby, the famous Pont des Amours spans the Thiou river, which flows through the old town. According to a local legend, a kiss exchanged in the middle of this bridge seals love forever. From the bridge, the view over Lake Annecy is remarkable, with La Tournette, the highest of the surrounding mountains, as a backdrop.

On the other side, the Canal du Vassé offers a charming, soothing setting for a peaceful walk.

Browse the market stalls

During a one-day visit to Annecy, plan a stop at the market to discover and stock up on good Savoie produce.

Several markets are held in Annecy throughout the week, mainly focused on food. The old town market, on rue Sainte-Claire, takes place on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. It is an ideal opportunity to enjoy the lively atmosphere while browsing stalls full of cured meats, Alpine cheeses such as Reblochon and Tomme, and fresh produce.

A lovely way to take a little piece of the region home! In winter, the town transforms for its Christmas market, one of the biggest in the region.

Visiting Annecy is clearly a must on any stay at a campsite near Lake Annecy!

SébastienSébastien’s tip

Park on the outskirts and walk or take a self-service bike into the centre, parking in the old town is limited and expensive in high season. And if you are looking for peace and quiet, go early in the morning, before the tourist coaches arrive.
