An introduction to Nordic walking

Nordic walking, a fast-growing sport, combines the benefits of hiking with the use of specially designed poles. Originating in Scandinavia, this sport suits all fitness levels and combines exploring varied trails with a full-body workout. The poles help propel your body forward. At the same time, this endurance sport strengthens the cardiorespiratory system.

Beyond the physical benefits, every Nordic walking session contributes to mental health. Among other things, it lets you connect with nature and free yourself from daily stress. In summer or in the snow, whatever the weather, this activity lets you enjoy the benefits of the outdoors.

In short, this type of walking gives you the opportunity to recharge and socialise with other hiking enthusiasts. Savoie has many sites suited to this activity, around Chambéry and the Combe de Savoie, outside our usual area but within reach for a day out from our mountain campsite.

Where to go Nordic walking in Savoie?

Although Savoie is known as a great playground for snow activities, it is home to many trails suited to Nordic walking.

For an optimal walking session with poles, choose one of these addresses:

  • Combe de Savoie: known for its mountain landscapes, the Combe de Savoie, about 45 km (50 min) from our campsite, has perfect trails for Nordic walking. For an enjoyable outing, contact a Nordic walking club or association. Remember to check the weather and equip yourself properly before practising this sport. You may also want to bring a notebook to track your progress.
  • Chambéry basin: about 105 km (1 h 20) from our campsite, the Chambéry basin offers a variety of trails suited to this form of walking with poles. Find out about the local parks, nature reserves and hiking trails that could suit this popular activity. To film each session in the Chambéry basin, take a camera. You can complete your kit with a notebook to record important information about the adventure, such as the routes.
  • Salève: a popular hiking spot, the Salève, about 70 km from Chambéry (around 120 km, just under 2 hours from our campsite), is a must for Nordic walking. To enjoy a Nordic walking session in the area, you can join local Nordic walking clubs that offer outings and lessons.

SébastienSébastien’s tip

Nordic walking can be done in any weather, but your choice of poles matters as much as your choice of trail: the wrong length or badly adjusted straps quickly tire your shoulders. If you are a beginner, join a club session before setting off on your own, the propulsion technique is easier to learn with someone watching.
