Where to go snowmobiling in Savoie?
In France, the use of motor vehicles in natural areas, such as the Savoie mountains, is strictly regulated under article L. 362-1 of the Environmental Code. Snowmobiling is therefore only allowed on marked circuits and authorised tracks, accompanied by registered professionals and within time slots set by the operators.
The figure to remember? €1,500! That is the fine you risk for riding off-piste illegally.
For snowmobiling in Savoie, we recommend one of these three exceptional areas! Note that rides usually take place in the late afternoon or evening, depending on each resort's organisation.
La Plagne: views of the peaks
This is the closest resort to your winter campsite. The Montchavin-Les Coches area is around ten kilometres from the Eden de la Vanoise.
The terrain offers varied relief, suited to a first snowmobile experience. You generally alternate between smoother sections and slightly sloping passages. Depending on the route and the weather, some areas offer lovely views of the surrounding peaks, sometimes with a clear view of the Mont Blanc massif.
Our opinion: an excellent option to discover the activity in a safe setting, suitable for beginners and more experienced riders alike.
Tignes: high-mountain atmosphere
Tignes is 36 kilometres from Landry. Thanks to its altitude, the resort generally enjoys good snow cover in season.
The landscape is more mineral and open, with vast high plateaus and a typically alpine atmosphere. Alpine wildlife (such as the rock ptarmigan) lives in some sensitive areas. The authorised routes naturally take these ecological issues into account!
Tip: above 1,500 m, oxygen is a little scarcer. As driving a heavy machine requires real physical effort, do not set off on an empty stomach and drink plenty before the ride to avoid tiring quickly!
Courchevel: a premium mountain experience
About 40 km from our mobile homes, the different levels of Courchevel (Le Praz, Moriond or 1850) offer exceptional snowmobile rides in Savoie.
Here, the word “premium” takes on its full meaning thanks to the quality of the terrain. The routes mostly use wide, perfectly groomed tracks (often towards the Altiport), allowing wider lines and much smoother riding than on classic forest trails.
The little extra: the magic of seeing the village lights twinkle below during your night ride.

Frequently asked questions
What gear do you need for a successful snowmobile outing?
To enjoy snowmobiling in Savoie comfortably, bring a complete warm, waterproof ski outfit (no jeans!). Add technical gloves that withstand extreme cold and ski goggles, which are compulsory. On your feet, wear waterproof snow boots or snowboard boots. Note that alpine ski boots are not allowed.
Is it better to book a snowmobile solo or as a pair?
The choice between solo and duo depends on how much you want to drive. Solo, driving a snowmobile in Savoie is physical, as the machine weighs over 200 kg. As a pair, the passenger enjoys the scenery but feels the bumps. If your budget allows, take one machine per person for the best experience, or ask to swap places halfway.
At what age can you go snowmobiling, and do you need a licence?
As for age, there are closed circuits for children (from 5-6 years old) on electric snowmobiles. For a real ride in the forest, however, the minimum passenger age is generally 8. For the driver, a car driving licence is almost always required by snowmobile rental companies in Savoie.
